Football / European Round-Up: Barcelona go clear

DEPORTIVO La Coruna's fading bid for the Spanish title was dealt a further blow when they lost 3-0 to the leaders, Barcelona, at the Nou Camp.

Although Deportivo dominated the first 25 minutes and could have scored a hatful but for erratic finishing and the performance of goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta, it was Barcelona who made the breakthrough in the 26th minute, Juan Goikoetxea lashing the ball home from 35 yards.

Two minutes before half-time the match was all but over when Michael Laudrup set up Guillermo Amor for Barcelona's second and the Deportivo defender Luis Lopez Rekarte was sent off for a second bookable offence. Ronald Koeman completed the victory from the penalty spot in the 56th minute.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid drew at home yesterday to lowly Logrones - who have scored only 20 goals all season - and now have 39 points, one fewer than Barcelona. They looked to have the match won when they went 2-1 ahead in the 88th minute, but conceded an equaliser two minutes into injury-time when Agustin Abadia added to the penalty he had scored in the 64th minute to put Logrones 1-0 up.

Eintracht Frankfurt saw off Wattenscheid 4-1 to replace Werder Bremen in second place in the German Bundesliga. Bremen followed up their European Super Cup defeat by Barcelona in midweek by losing 2-0 at the bottom club, Bochum. The leaders, Bayern Munich, drew 0-0 away at Dynamo Dresden, failing to exploit the home side's 10 men after the defender Andreas Wagenhaus was sent off.

First played second in the Netherlands as well as England - and with the same scoreline. PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord shared two goals in an ill-tempered match which saw eight players booked and PSV's Jan Heintze sent off. PSV had thought they would extend their lead at the top of the table after scoring through Romario, but Feyenoord's Dean Goree equalised in the final seconds. Ajax took advantage, beating RKC Waalwijk 2-1 to draw within two points of the leaders.

Gaetan Huard, of Bordeaux, set a French goalkeeping record in a 0-0 draw with Marseille - he has now gone 916 minutes without conceding a goal. Monaco also drew 0- 0, at St Etienne, and so remain top of the table thanks to a better goal difference than Marseille.
