Football : Salako dismisses Newcastle as a move too far

Kevin Keegan now knows how Joe Royle felt when Chris Armstrong chose Tottenham ahead of Everton in order to stay in London. John Salako, Armstrong's Crystal Palace colleague and a former England winger, has rejected a pounds 2.5m move to Newcastle because it is "too far north".

Salako pulled out of a press conference last Friday at which Keegan planned to unveil him as his third summer signing. He wanted more time to reflect on the transfer, but a Palace statement yesterday said: "He is turning down the move because he does not want to go as far north as Newcastle."

Alan Sugar, the Tottenham chairman, has called on the Football Association to regulate transfer fees. "I hope we've reached the end of this lunacy," Sugar said. "It must stop after this Bergkamp deal quite frankly. Even Manchester United - a club with financial clout but a properly run business institution - can't afford such irresponsible actions. It's down to the FA to sort it out."

As Armstrong was completing his pounds 4.5m switch to Spurs, Palace paid Bromsgrove Rovers pounds 80,000 for Steve Taylor, an England semi-professional striker who once partnered Stan Collymore in attack for Cannock and District Schools.

Paul Ince will decide tomorrow whether Milan, in the form of Internazionale, is a move too far for him. Inter have agreed to pay pounds 7m for the England midfielder, but Martin Edwards, chief executive of Manchester United, has intimated that if Ince decided against Italy then he would be staying at Old Trafford.

Eric Cantona's return - scheduled for the Manchester derby on 14 October - may now come at home to Liverpool on 1 or 2 October. The Frenchman's suspension for assaulting a Crystal Palace supporter ends at midnight on 30 September, the day United are due to face the Anfield side.

However, an FA spokesperson confirmed that Cantona would be free to play if the game was switched to the Sunday or Monday for live television coverage.

Mark Atkins, the Blackburn midfielder, has turned down a new contract with the champions and is considering an offer from Millwall. Maurizio Gaudino, who spent half of last season on loan to Manchester City, is poised to return to Eintracht Frankfurt after City failed to take up an option to buy the German international.

Brian Horton has taken charge at Huddersfield on a two-year contract. His predecessor, Neil Warnock, is poised to step down two divisions with Plymouth.
