Football: Agnew cast as avenger

STEVE AGNEW returns to Ewood Park tonight, on the occasion of British record signing Chris Sutton's first home game, intent on showing the Blackburn fans what they missed.

The Leicester midfielder joined Rovers in a pounds 700,000 move from Barnsley in 1991, but a series of injuries meant he played just four games in 18 months. Kenny Dalglish moved him on to Filbert Street in February, 1993 in a pounds 250,000 deal and Agnew helped Leicester to promotion in his first full season at the club.

'Things didn't work out for me at Blackburn and I got a lot of stick,' Agnew said. 'The fans didn't get a chance to see me play and there couldn't be a better time to show them what I can do.'

Leicester's return to the top flight on Sunday against Newcastle turned out to be a big disappointment as they were outclassed in a 3-1 home defeat.

'We know we made the mistake of defending too deep against Newcastle and we won't do it again.'

Brian Little, the Leicester manager, has decided to keeps faith with the same team and a five-man defence.

Tony Dorigo, the England international left-back, remains doubtful for Leeds' match against Arsenal at Elland Road. Dorigo has a knee injury and Nigel Worthington stands by to make his home debut, as will Carlton Palmer.

Ipswich have added David Linighan, who is out-of-contract, to their squad for the match against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park.

Inter Cardiff left for their Uefa Cuptie against Katowice yesterday without the former Wales and Manchester United midfielder Mickey Thomas, who is prohibited from leaving the country by a probation order. Inter Cardiff lost the first leg 2-0.
