Football: England player-by-player assessment

1 David Seaman

Following the criticism of his performance in England's last game, in Stockholm, he must have been pleased to have little to do other than field back-passes, overhit through balls and underhit shots.

2 Gary Neville

In for the injured Tony Adams, was asked no difficult questions on the right-side of the back three. Had a few tussles with Hristov. Might have got forward more in support of Anderton and Lee.

6 Gareth Southgate

Outstanding form as the central defender in Aston Villa's back three was never tested to any degree by Bulgaria's unambitious tactics. Training last week must have been harder than his 90 minutes.

5 Sol Campbell

Scored in Spurs' two previous games but missed a free header in the 12th minute. Tangled a few times with Stoichkov, rampaged forward on left and eventually got in a 79th-minute shot.

7 Darren Anderton

Initially looked in the mood but as England's bright start faded, so did he. Flitted in and out of thereafter, mostly out. Booked after a series of laughably inexpert tackles. Substituted after 66 minutes.

8 Jamie Redknapp

An early, raking pass to Owen suggested his early season form for Liverpool was in place but after a while the rangefinder seemed to malfunction. Didn't do enough near goal. Booked for a stupid foul.

4 Robert Lee

Not an enforcer like Paul Ince, who he replaced in central midfield, Lee had anchor role for the first hour then replaced Anderton on the right. Given Bulgaria's tactics, he could have got forward more.

3 Andy Hinchcliffe

Replaced Le Saux as left wing-back; lasted only 34 minutes before groin injury forced him off. Early right-wing corner almost gave Owen a goal. Should have done better with a 31st-minute header.

11 Paul Scholes

Had a less than satisfactory game in Sweden last time out. He looked a bit brighter here but never really disturbed the closely spun Bulgarian defensive web. Best effort: set up Owen after 40 minutes.

9 Alan Shearer

He may be popping in chances for Newcastle United but he was well- policed throughout and given only one opportunity on goal, a header over the bar from Le Saux's cross in the 55th minute.

10 Michael Owen

Had two sharp chances in the first five minutes, shot wide from 20 yards in the 18th and poor control let him down in the 40th when played in by Scholes. Not one chance ended on target, though.

14 Graeme Le Saux

On for Hinchcliffe after 34 minutes, he made himself busy on the left where Bulgaria were weakest. But his crosses rarely troubled Bulgarian composure.

15 David Batty

Came on after 66 minutes, for Anderton, and played as the defensive midfielder (Lee moving wide). Effective at what he does, but he's hardly the sort of substitute to change the course of a match, is he?

17 Teddy Sheringham

Introduced after 76 minutes for Manchester United team-mate Scholes but did little in that time to suggest he'd break the deadlock.
