WITH the top two sides both failing to win, Real Madrid made progress towards the summit of the Spanish league after Ivan Zamorano, their Chilean international striker, scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Tenerife - watched by a crowd of 92,000 at the Bernabeu stadium.

At the half-way point of the season, Real Madrid are in third place, three points behind the leaders, Deportivo La Coruna, and one behind the champions, Barcelona, who have a game in hand. Deportivo were lucky to draw 1-1 at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, with their Brazilian forward, Bebeto, scoring his 19th goal of the campaign in the third minute of injury time to earn them a point.

Barcelona were second best for most of their 2-2 draw at John Toshack's Real Sociedad. Ronald Koeman gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot but then conceded a spot-kick. Hristo Stoichkov restored Barcelona's lead but a header two minutes from time by Meho Kodro, the home side's Bosnian forward, tied the match.

In France, Monaco lead Nantes by a point after Jurgen Klinsmann scored his 14th goal of the season in a 2-0 win over Le Havre.
