Football: Fenerbahce stay alive with a late strike

Jes Hogh, the Danish defender, headed the goal which beat Rapid Vienna in Istanbul last night and kept alive Fenerbahce's hopes of ousting Manchester United from the European Champions' League.

Peter Schmeichel's international team-mate struck with 15 minutes to go and Fenerbahce could go through to the quarter-finals even if they lose to Juventus in Turin next month - as long as United lose in Vienna.

Ajax, the 1995 champions, are in danger of elimination after a 2-1 defeat by Auxerre in Amsterdam. The French champions had a dream start when Bernard Diomede rifled in his third Champions' League goal of the season.

A minute before the break Ajax drew level through their Nigerian winger Tijani Babangida, but Steve Marlet sealed victory for Auxerre 11 minutes into the second half.

Ajax will be without the defender Frank de Boer for the visit to Grasshopper Zurich next month which will decide their fate. De Boer also missed last night's game after damaging his left ankle in training.

Milan edged closer to a quarter-final against Juventus with a 1-1 draw against Porto in Portugal. The Dutchman Edgar Davids put Milan ahead after 55 minutes, but Porto struck back through the Brazilian midfielder Edmilson, and will finish top of Group D.
