Ipswich Town. .3
WITH one side rising, and the other sinking towards the mid-table hinterland, this could have been the scoreless bore to end them all. Ipswich were goalless in the League for 410 minutes, and know how to be parsimonious, too, but with little at stake both teams produced a delightful exhibition of open, devil- may-care football. The difference in the end was the glorious Matthew Le Tissier, who side-footed in the winner in a hectic finale.
Ipswich had only extended their famine to 423 minutes when David Linighan found himself unattended at the end of Paul Goddard's cross. A centre-back replied within five minutes, Richard Hall meeting Le Tissier's corner with the meatiest of headers. Le Tissier had one of his afternoons when he looked several cuts above his hard-working colleagues. One lob from just outside the centre circle would have been even more sublime had it not shaved the bar. His excellence was matched by that of Clive Baker, who got in his way three times.
Another of Southampton's assets, the unsung Tim Flowers, could not prevent Goddard reclaiming the lead, but his stop from Jason Dozzell after the break was as good as anything Baker could do. Ipswich took to defending in numbers and that probably brought about Mick Stockwell's trip on Neil Maddison. From the spot Le Tissier found his way past Baker. With three minutes to run Jeff Kenna bundled in what everyone assumed was the winner, but Chris Kiwomya sneaked up behind Kenny Monkou to toe an equaliser past Flowers. There was still time for Le Tissier to sign off for Southampton's sixth consecutive home win.
