Football Round-Up: Town fans protest at McGiven

FOUR HUNDRED Ipswich fans stayed behind at Portman Road for 45 minutes last night, calling for the resignation of the team manager, Mick McGiven, following their 2-0 defeat by Coventry.

Sean Flynn opened the scoring after 55 minutes with a low drive from 16 yards and, 11 minutes later, Peter Ndlovu ran through the middle to beat Clive Baker.

McGiven said: 'I have to be sympathetic with the fans who have been demonstrating on the pitch. I cannot accept a second-half performance which was abysmal. Once we conceded the first goal, we folded like a pack of cards and it is not the first time that has happened.'

In the First Division, Oxford United blunted Wolves' hopes of reaching the play-offs and increased their own chances of avoiding relegation with their biggest win of the season, a 4-0 home thumping of Wolves. It was Wolves' heaviest defeat for three years and the first under Graham Taylor.

Oxford's first was netted by John Byrne and the lead was extended when a cross by Joey Beauchamp was headed into his own net by Mark Venus. Before half-time, Wolves were punished again when Byrne flicked Jimmy Carter's free-kick to the unmarked Paul Moody who made no mistake from close in. A mistake by Mike Stowell, who dropped a Gary Smart cross, presented Matt Elliott with Oxford's fourth.
