Football: That was the weekend that was - Enfield change from Goliath into David
Monday 01 November 1999
Enfield had been close to elimination in a fourth qualifying round replay after trailing to Dr Martens League side Baldock Town, before a late equaliser took the tie to extra time. The north Londoners progressed only on penalties.
"It is very similar to our situation with Baldock when we were supposed to win easily," manager Jim Chandler told his players before taking on the 1997 semi-finalists. "They will be expected to beat us too but that isn't what always happens. Now we are the underdogs and we can go out there and enjoy the game."
Unfortunately, Chandler found that he shares with Gianluca Vialli the handicap of a team unable to keep its mind on the job. In between their Cup exploits, Enfield surrendered top place in the Ryman through a below- par performance against Boreham Wood. "I wondered about the players' commitment," Chandler said. "Some of them had their minds on the Chesterfield game."
