MARK BOSNICH, the Aston Villa goalkeeper, was yesterday banned by Fifa, the world governing body, following his withdrawal from Australia's squad for two World Cup ties against Canada. The worldwide ban, until 16 August, means that the 21- year-old Bosnich will miss Villa's opening match of the new Premier League season, against Queen's Park Rangers on 14 August. Bosnich plans to seek legal advice on the matter.

Bosnich said: 'This could be restraint of trade. My heart is with Aston Villa - they are my bread and butter.'

Australia play Canada in Edmonton today, with the return on 15 August, and Bosnich was named in their squad. Under Fifa rules, clubs must release players for World Cup duty, but Bosnich withdrew, claiming he had retired from international football for business reasons. The Australian Soccer Federation lodged a complaint with Fifa which was upheld yesterday when Bosnich was banned until 16 August.

Meanwhile, an FA commission will meet on Tuesday to investigate Bosnich's move to Villa from the Australian club Sydney Croatia. It is alleged Villa breached domestic and Fifa rules over the signing.

Keith Burkinshaw, the West Bromwich Albion manager, has yet to sign a contract at the club. Burkinshaw agreed terms for a deal when he replaced Ossie Ardiles last month.

Manchester United will be without the injured Ryan Giggs and Lee Sharpe for their friendly against Benfica at Old Trafford today.
