Ballon d'Or: Robert Lewandowski was not happy with his place in France Football's rankings

The Bayern Munich striker came sixteenth in the overall rankings, behind the likes of Rui Patricio and Jamie Vardy

Robert Lewandowski took to social media to register his disappointment with his ranking in the 2016 Ballon d’Or standings.

The results of this year’s award were gradually revealed on Twitter by France Football, the Ballon d’Or’s founders and organisers, over the course of Monday evening.

Lewandowski came in sixteenth place, behind the likes of Rui Patricio, the Portugal goalkeeper, and Jamie Vardy, whose goals fired Leicester City to an unlikely Premier League title.

The Bayern Munich striker was not particularly happy with his placing and made his displeasure known by tweeting the award’s organisers directly.

Lewandowski, who has scored 46 times so far during this calendar year, simply sent four ‘cry laugh’ emojis in response.

The 28-year-old placed ahead of Real Madrid’s Luka Modric and Toni Kroos and West Ham’s Dimitri Payet, who each received one vote and were tied for seventeenth place.

Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Ramos and Manuel Neuer, Lewandowski’s team-mate at Bayern, were among those who were shortlisted but failed to receive a vote.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the award, picking up the fourth Ballon d'Or of his career to date.

The Real Madrid and Portugal forward enjoyed a trophy-laden year in 2016, lifting the Champions League and European Championships at club and international level respectively.
