Champions League round-up: Messi makes light work of Barça's trip

Holders Barcelona recorded their first win of this season's Champions League in emphatic fashion as they overwhelmed BATE Borisov 5-0 in Belarus. Predictably, Lionel Messi led the way, scoring twice.

Perhaps the most difficult part of the game was Barcelona's long journey to Minsk but Pep Guardiola's side showed few signs of weariness as they raced into a 3-0 lead by the 38th minute. An own goal from BATE's Aleksandr Volodko in the 19th minute and a header from Pedro three minutes later had them in early control.

Messi headed the third just before the break and smashed the fourth high into the net before David Villa made it five late on.

In Arsenal's group, Marseilles lead the way with two wins out of two after beating Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Stade Vélodrome, thanks to two goals from Andre Ayew, one a penalty, and a Loic Remy strike. France keeper Steve Mandanda was also instrumental in their win, making a series of superb saves throughout. Marseilles' night finished on a sour note when substitute Jordan Ayew was sent off in stoppage time.

Bayer Leverkusen, in Chelsea's group, got their first points with a 2-0 victory over Genk, midfielder Lars Bender getting their first with a long-range strike in the 29th minute. Michael Ballack then added a second in added time at the end of the second half.

Milan made hard work of breaking down Czech side Viktoria Plzen at San Siro, the Italian champions needing a Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty in the 53rd minute to break the deadlock after a handball in the penalty area. Thirteen minutes later, the Swede poked the ball through for Antonio Cassano to chip the ball over goalkeeper Marek Cech to seal a 2-0 win.

Roman Shirokov scored a goal in each half to lead Zenit St Petersburg to a 3-1 victory over 10-man Porto. For the Portuguese side, defender Jorge Fucile was sent off just before the break after picking up two yellow cards.
