Coronavirus: How has sport been affected?

Borussia Dortmund players have taken wage cuts as part of the Bundesliga club’s attempt to financially support non-playing staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

Coaching staff at BVB have also accepted deductions from their wages.

The move follows similar measures by fellow Bundesliga sides Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach.

A statement released by Dortmund read: “Our players voluntarily waive part of their salaries and show solidarity with the club’s 850 employees and their families.

“Borussia Dortmund’s CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke, values the players’ waiver of significant parts of their salaries ‘as a valuable sign of solidarity both to the outside world and to our 850 employees’.

“Like the players, the club managers and the coaching staff also waive part of their salaries.

“In total, Borussia Dortmund saves a double-digit million amount in Euro, which supports to secure and protect BVB as one of Dortmund’s largest employers during the corona crisis.”

In England, Leeds United players, coaching staff and senior management have also voluntarily deferred their wages to ensure the club’s 272 members of full-time and casual staff are paid in the coming months.
