Daniel Sturridge takes part in England training in attempt to prove fitness
Hodgson to tell unlucky players their fate on Tuesday after training
Daniel Sturridge took part in training on Monday in an attempt to prove his fitness for the European Championships.
The Liverpool striker had to pull out of England’s friendly international against Australia at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Friday night due to a calf strain but he joined in with a session with the other players at Watford's training ground near their base, The Grove, on Monday morning.
Roy Hodgson has to cut his squad of 26 down to 23 by Tuesday night as the end of May is the Uefa deadline and the England manager now has to decide whether to take a gamble and include the injury-prone Sturridge in his final group for France.
Marcus Rashford, the young Manchester United striker, now seems assured of his spot in the squad following his goalscoring debut on Friday night which has made Sturridge vulnerable. Hodgson may yet take both, though, and take one fewer midfielders. This option would leave two of Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater, Newcastle United’s Andros Townsend and Ross Barkley of Everton in danger of being omitted. Manchester City’s Fabian Delph has already been told he will not be going to France as he has a groin injury.
Hodgson will have a private conversation with the other two individuals who will not make the cut after training on Tuesday and before he submits his final list to Uefa. England play a final Euro 2016 warm-up game against Portugal at Wembley on Thursday night and their first match in the tournament is against Russia on June 11.
