Julien Faubert opened the visitor's account in the 16th minute when he latched on to a cross from Jean-Claude Darcheville to volley past Marseille keeper Cedric Carrasso.

Marseille's Frederic Dehu was shown a red card for a professional foul in the 53rd minute, and Bordeaux wrapped up all three points a minute before time when Darcheville turned provider again for the youngster Pierre Ducasse.

A new era in Auxerre's history began in disappointing fashion in Strasbourg as Jacques Santini's first game in charge ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Ligue 1 newcomers Nancy were taught a harsh lesson in the realities of top-flight football after seeing two players sent off in their 1-0 defeat to Monaco.

Meanwhile, Jean Makoun's first-half goal was enough to hand Lille victory over Rennes.

Tunisian striker Francileudo Santos returned to haunt his old club as Toulouse secured a 1-0 victory against Sochaux.

Nantes got their season off to a flying start with a commanding 2-0 win against an under-par Lens outfit. Both Nantes goals came in the opening seven minutes, with Gilles Yapi Yapo scoring the first after four minutes before Luigi Glombard soon sealed the win.

Nice made a disappointing start to their campaign as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by newly promoted Troyes.

St Etienne and Ajaccio fans will be hoping for better from their clubs this season after the two teams played out a goalless draw.
