Iker Casillas condemned for making 'racist' joke to Porto team-mate Suk Hyun-jun

Iker Casillas has risked condemnation after appearing to make a racist joke to South Korean team-mate Suk Hyun-jun on Instagram.

The Porto goalkeeper, who plays alongside Suk for the Primeira Liga side, told the 24-year-old striker: “open your eyes!”

Despite the racial overtone to Casillas’ remark, Suk appeared to react in a light-hearted fashion, telling him: “already open amigo”.

Casillas’ comment has been criticised on social media, with users viewing it as insensitive and racist. Others, meanwhile, have attempted to justify it as merely a joke between two friends.

The 35-year-old, who moved to Porto after ending his 25-year association with former club Real Madrid in 2015, has been selected in Vicente del Bosque’s provisional Spain squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Provided he holds off competition for the No 1 jersey from compatriot and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, Casillas will captain Del Bosque’s side.

Spain are hoping to win their third consecutive European Championships, having emerged victorious in 2008 and 2012.
