Manchester City 0 Barcelona 2: City remove tweet complimenting Martin Demichelis's performance...posted one minute before he was sent off for foul on Lionel Messi
Club also tweeted incorrect call on Barca offside goal later on
Wednesday 19 February 2014
Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat, which barring a miracle will see they knocked out of this year’s Champions League, wasn’t the only thing that went wrong for the club last night, with City’s twitter account also left rather embarrassed.
The club’s in-game social media commentary made a blunder not once but twice during the course of the match.
The first of which stated how good Martin Demichelis’s performance was just seconds before giving away a penalty and subsequently being shown a red card.
This prompted the club to hastily removed the tweet and avoid any further grief, only for several twitter users to retweet their mistake.
City’s official account posted: “Demichelis has been a rock at the heart of the City defence. The Argentine is thwarting everything Barca throw at him so far!”
It was tweeted on 51 minutes, just 60 seconds before Demichelis was given his marching orders for bringing down Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in the box.
What City wrote one minute before that foul on Messi Messi picked himself up to put the Spanish giants 1-0 up and with almost the entire second half still to play against City’s 10 men. Manuel Pellegrini’s men went on to lose by two goals and now have a mountain to climb in the second leg at the Nou Camp on March 12.
The second embarrassing moment of the night for City’s tweeters came in 81st minute. They posted to their one and half million followers: “Offside flag goes up quickly and correctly on Fabregas who stroked the ball into Hart’s net.”
81. Offside flag goes up quickly and correctly on Fábregas who stroked the ball into Hart's net.; Manchester City FC (@MCFC) February 18, 2014
Two mistakes here, firstly Samir Nasri was clearly playing Fabregas onside and secondly, Gerard Pique was the player who ‘ stroked the ball into Hart’s net’.
Red faces all round for Manchester City then, both on and off the pitch, on a poor night for the Sky Blues.
