Sergio Aguero revels in his night of history after becoming Manchester City's all-time top goalscorer

Sergio Aguero was left to bask in the glory of becoming Manchester City's all-time top goalscorer on Thursday night after finally scoring his 178th goal for the club.

The forward struck in the side’s 4-2 win over Napoli in the Champions League, taking him past Eric Brook's long-standing record.

The Argentina international joined Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones and Raheem Sterling on the scoresheet as City booked their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

Aguero claimed his 178th strike for the club in the San Paolo stadium where Diego Maradona made his legend for Napoli, and will now give the shirt from this fine 4-2 win to his son Benji, who of course is Maradona’s grandson.

He said afterwards: "I am very happy for this moment, I am happy because the team offered support to me and the fans and all of the staff, so I must say thank you to everyone.

"I am enjoying this moment, I am very happy, this moment has been a long time coming."

City fell behind to Lorenzo Insigne's early goal and then saw themselves pegged back by Jorginho's penalty after Otamendi and Stones had put them ahead.

Aguero's landmark goal restored their lead and Sterling made sure of the win at the death.

Aguero added: "Napoli are a good team, winning away in the Champions League is always difficult, so I am happy to win and we have qualified.

"We have to keep going the same way, every game we play the same way, we need to keep going because it is a long season."
