Romelu Lukaku has been forced to clarify his comments after appearing to accuse some of his teammates of "hiding" after Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League.

After dominating the first leg in Spain three weeks ago Sevilla again took the game to a lacklustre United side on Tuesday evening and deservedly went through with a 2-1 victory as substitute Wissam Ben Yedder's quickfire brace meant a late Lukaku goal was mere consolation.

The Red Devils were booed off the field afterwards and striker Lukaku admitted they weren't good enough to progress to the last eight while appearing to suggest some of his teammates weren't up for the fight.

"Some things were flawed with some players, some players were hiding," he told BT Sport. "The deception was really big, because you know I think we started the game well, and then we started to let them have control in the game.

"Then we had a few half chances but we didn't really score, and then they scored the first goal.

"From that moment on we tried to chase the game and they scored the second one which was a big blow. At the end we kept pushing but it was not enough.

"We should have done better because the bit of quality we have in the team, we should have went through. We didn't deserve it because we weren't good enough."

But the Belgian moved to clarify what he meant on Wednesday morning.

"Never will I criticise my teammates! Hiding your face when you’re upset in the dressing room is normal.." he said on Twitter. "The result is terrible but we’re Manchester United, we will bounce back for sure with your support! Another big game coming up time to prepare for that one!

"200 goals now in my young career but it’s time to add trophies in my career… time to work even harder."

Boss Jose Mourinho attempted to downplay the result by surprisingly bringing up the last-16 exits he masterminded from the away dugout at Old Trafford.

"I told you yesterday that it would be disappointment if we would lose the match," he said. "I don't want to make a drama of it, we don't have time. We have a match on Saturday, we have no time to be sad for more than 24 hours and that's football. That's not the end of the world.

"I sit in this chair twice in the Champions League and I knock out Man United at home at Old Trafford. I sit in this chair with Porto, Man United out. I sit in this chair with Real Madrid, Man United out.

"So, I don't think it is something new for the club and of course being Manchester United manager and losing a Champions League tie at home is a disappointment."
