A Napoli fan who was shot in the build-up to the 2014 Italian Cup Final last month has died, his family have confirmed.
Ciro Esposito was shot in the chest ahead of the Cup final between Napoli and Fiorentina, and he sadly passed away on Wednesday morning, aged 29.
In a statement released by Esposito’s family, it said: “Ciro died to save others ... No one can give us back Ciro but we ask for justice in his name and not revenge.”
The family also asked that whoever was responsible for making the mistakes in organising public safety to be held accountable for his tragic death, 50 days on from the shooting.
Roma fan Daniele De Santis was arrested after he fired four shots, with police charging him with alleged attempted murder. The charge will now become voluntary manslaughter.
Esposito was at the front of people who ran towards De Santis in an effort to stop him from throwing paper bombs at a passing bus, which was carrying Napoli fans towards the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
