Manchester United have expressed their shock after a fan was stabbed following Wednesday's Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Foreign Office confirmed it was in contact with French authorities.

A spokesman said: "We are in touch with the French authorities following an incident involving a British man in Paris on March 6 and stand ready to offer assistance if required."

The man was travelling in a taxi before being taken to hospital in the French capital and underwent surgery, according to reports.

It is understood that the fan is recovering and could be out of hospital by Monday.

A United spokesperson said: "We were shocked to hear about the incident with one of our fans who was stabbed while in Paris for the Champions League game.

"Everyone at the club wishes him well during his recovery."
