Rio Ferdinand admits he's 'hurting' after shock Manchester United defeat

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has admitted that the club's shock Europa League defeat to Danish side FC Midtjylland has left him "hurting".

Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles and the Champions League at Old Trafford, has been critical of manager Louis van Gaal and the side at times this season in his role as a BT Sport pundit.

However, taking to social media in the aftermath of the club's 2-1 defeat, Ferdinand posted a short but very revealing insight into his feelings.

After being asked for his thoughts on the result, Ferdinand responded: "Just leave it bro... I'm hurting!".

Manchester United supporters who travelled to watch the club - and pay £71 for the privilege - were highly critical at the MCH Arena, with video footage emerging that showed fans repeatedly chanting "We're f****** s***" at the players after the full-time whistle.

Van Gaal, who is now under extreme pressure to remain in his job with Jose Mourinho linked, admitted that the fans were not wrong to make their anger known.

"The fans can criticise," he said "When you see the second half, then maybe they are right. We have to improve and then maybe the fans shall support us again. We have seen that in the 18 months I have been here."
