FA Cup final 2014: Arsenal v Hull - past meetings

A look at what happened when the sides met in the FA Cup before

Hull and Arsenal will renew an FA Cup rivalry stretching back over 100 years when they go head to head in the final at Wembley on Saturday.

The clubs have met three times previously - plus two replays - with their first encounter coming in 1908 when Arsenal were still Woolwich Arsenal and based in south-east London.

First round, 1908: Woolwich Arsenal 0 Hull 0

Arsenal, then still known as Woolwich Arsenal, were established members of the top flight and expected to see off Second Division Hull with few problems in Plumstead. But the visitors, facing top-flight opposition for the first time, dug in for a goalless draw which ensured the Londoners would have to travel north for a replay five days later.

First-round replay, 1908: Hull 4 Woolwich Arsenal 1

Watched by a crowd of over 16,000 at Anlaby Road, Hull pulled off a major upset with goals from Joe Shaw (two), Arthur Temple and Jackie Smith giving them a famous victory just four years after the club's formation. Hull's run ended in the second round when they were beaten by Aston Villa.

Semi-final, 1930: Arsenal 2 Hull 2

Despite languishing at the bottom of the Second Division and soon to drop to the third tier, Hull made it to the FA Cup semi-finals at Elland Road and looked set to cause another major upset. Jimmy Howieson's opener and an own goal from Eddie Hapgood left the Gunners 2-0 down at half-time. But late goals from David Jack and Cliff Bastin earned Arsenal a replay.

Semi-final replay, 1930: Arsenal 1 Hull 0

In the replay at Villa Park, Hull started confidently but Arsenal were not about to let another opportunity slip, and made it through to the final as Jack's thunderous volley proved to be the only goal of the game. One month later, the Gunners beat Huddersfield at Wembley to claim the trophy for the first time in their history. Hull would not return to the semi-final stage until 2014.

Quarter-final, 2009: Arsenal 2 Hull 1

Arsenal had been stunned by Hull in a Barclays Premier League clash at the Emirates earlier the same season and looked set for another upset when Nick Barmby gave Hull an early lead. The Tigers held onto their advantage for an hour before Robin van Persie equalised with 16 minutes to go and William Gallas headed an 84th-minute winner.
