Luton Town 2 Queen'S Park Rangers 0: Newell moves on and upward

After he saw his side beat Queen's Park Rangers in an enjoyable encounter at Kenilworth Road, he insisted he had little more to say on the subject.

"I dealt with professional people in the FA. I sense that they share the same frustration as me," said Newell, who appeared before football's governing body on Wednesday. "But now it is nothing to do with me. I don't want to be asked questions about it game after game after game. It is now out of my hands."

His counterpart, Ian Holloway, was keen to distance himself from one of the two issues troubling the decision makers at Soho Square, the QPR manager denying that he had provided support to Newell's assertions.

Newell's intentions to end talk of agents and bungs must be something to do with his Luton side failing to win since the turn of the year. Victory against QPR helped to put their play-off aspirations back on track.

The Finnish defender Markus Heikkinen gave his side the lead in the 13th minute by heading home from close range. Just before the break Luton must have thought they had made it 2-0 when their striker Steve Howard won an aerial battle with QPR's keeper Simon Royce and put the ball in the net. The "goal" was disallowed for a foul.

Luton retained the momentum gained in the first half and were forcing back their visitors when another "goal" was disallowed, this time for the substitute Warren Feeney on 69 minutes, the Northern Ireland striker adjudged offside.

The points were sealed on 85 minutes. Heikkinen, deservedly man of the match, delivered a fine pass to Carlos Edwards, who exposed some tired defending before Howard forced home a low cross for the 99th goal of his Luton career.
