The Football League has announced that a minute’s silence will be held before all matches this weekend to pay tribute to the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks.

More than 120 people are feared dead after a series of attacks and explosions rocked Paris on Friday night, with gunmen and suicide bombers targeting restaurants, bars and the Stade de France where an international friendly between France and Germany was taking place.

While there are no fixtures in the Premier League and the Championship due to the international break, games are scheduled to go ahead in Leagues One and Two, and the Football League announced on Saturday morning that a minute’s silence will be held before all games in the two leagues.

A message on Twitter sent out by the Football League read: “A minute’s silence will precede all matches this weekend following the tragic events of the #ParisAttacks.”

A second message read: The silence is a mark of respect to those that lost their lives last night & as a show of solidarity with the people of France #ParisAttacks.”

The Germany national team was forced to spend the night at the Stade de France, the national stadium in the centre of Paris, overnight before returning home this morning. The DFB confirmed that the squad had returned safely to Frankfurt on Saturday morning.

Furthermore, a European Champions Cup match between Racing Metro, based in Paris, and Scottish side Glasgow Warriors has been postponed due to safety fears, while jockey’s at today’s meeting in Cheltenham will wear black armbands and the venue will hold a minute’s silence at midday in memory of the victims.
