Round-Up: Seol the provider as Wolves close in

Wolves took the lead two minutes before half-time when Carl Cort fired in left-footed from Seol Ki-Hyeon's centre. Seol was the provider again three minutes into the second half when his cross was deflected to Kenny Miller, who headed in. Lee Naylor's strike made it 3-0, Lewis Buxton getting the Potters' injury-time consolation.

Third-placed Watford lost ground on the automatic promotion places when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Crewe Alexandra. Injuries forced the visitors' manager Adrian Boothroyd to start with striker Trevor Benjamin, and he had the game's first chance but headed over the bar. "He did well today," the Hornets manager said. "He's a player who's lost his way a bit but we've given him a chance. He was unfortunate not to score."

Beaten in the Carling Cup by teams from the bottom half of League Two, both Southampton and Plymouth Argyle, under new manager Tony Pulis, needed to redeem their reputations. A goalless stalemate at St Mary's Stadium hardly qualified as that.

Joe Royle thought his Ipswich Town side would get a result at Elland Road and Sam Parkin did indeed score twice as the Suffolk side beat Leeds United 2-0. Richard Cresswell missed a Leeds penalty. "We rode our luck today and during half-time I went as ballistic as I've seen myself go," Royle admitted. "But credit to the lads because we defended superbly. We dug in there, we got blocks in and we scored two very, very good goals."

At the bottom, Burnley and Brighton drew 1-1 at Turf Moor, Gareth O'Connor equalising from the penalty spot after Paul McShane had given the visitors the lead, and at the New Den Millwall had Jody Morris sent off in the last minute of a 0-0 draw with Cardiff City. Neither manager had much positive to say about referee Andy D'Urso. "I don't know if he swallowed the pea in his whistle, but every time he breathed in the whistle went," Cardiff's Dave Jones said.

Elsewhere, Coventry City lost at their new Ricoh Stadium for the first time when the Hull City midfielder John Welsh, on a season's loan from Liverpool, scored twice to earn the Tigers, who had defender Mark Lynch sent off, a 2-0 away win, and Queen's Park Rangers won 2-1 at Leicester City. Marc Nygaard headed in after 12 minutes, and eight minutes later Leicester's Alan Maybury was sent off after he brought down Paul Furlong. Elvis Hammond equalised, but Furlong scored QPR's winner. He too was later sent off.

The Carling Cup giantkillers Grimsby Town, who beat Spurs and next entertain Newcastle United, Gillingham, (Portsmouth), and Doncaster Rovers (Manchester City), who will meet at Belle Vue, had a mixed return to league action. The Mariners, top of League Two, drew 1-1 at Boston United, while in League One the Gills drew 2-2 at Tranmere Rovers but Doncaster won the Yorkshire derby at Barnsley 2-0. Gary Johnson, the new manager of Bristol City, saw the Robins win 3-2 at Brentford; his former side Yeovil beat Port Vale 1-0.
