Beckham: Alpay said something about my mother

"We never do things easy but the 0-0 showed our character. We had our chances in the first half with the penalty and everything but that's in the past now. When I stepped up to take the penalty the ground just gave way. When Alpay came up to me [after the penalty] he said... there was so much going on I couldn't understand what he said. When we came off at half-time he just ran past me, clipped me round the ear, and said something about my mother, which upset me a bit. The referee [Pierluigi Collina] just said 'calm things down. The game's too big for any silliness so have a word with your players and calm things down'. And that's what we did. We've stuck together all week through some tough times and we did so again tonight. We worked hard. Every man got behind the ball. It wasn't our best game but every one of the players was magnificent tonight. There is no split in the squad. That didn't come from us. That was just rumours. We're in it together."
