Carlo Ancelotti appoints 27-year-old son as Bayern Munich assistant coach
The former AC Milan youth player graduated with a degree in sports science and joined Real Madrid as a fitness coach before moving with his father to Munich
Carlo Ancelotti has appointed his 27-year-old son, Davide Ancelotti, as the assistant coach of Bayern Munich.
The decision is likely to raise a few eyebrows on account of Davide’s age and will be seen by many as an act of footballing nepotism.
Despite having little coaching experience, the 27-year-old has landed the role at the Bundesliga giants under his father’s stewardship.
The Italian is a former youth player at AC Milan but after failing to make the grade at the Serie A outfit, he turned to sports science and graduated with a degree in the subject.
This qualification helped land the youngster a job as a fitness coach at Real Madrid during his father’s tenure as head coach.
Davide worked closely with the Madrid outfit during his time in Spain but soon departed the Bernabeu when his father parted ways with the La Liga giants.
Having moved with his father to Munich, Davide was quickly promoted to assistant coach.
Although Carlo Ancelotti’s position as head coach at Bayern Munich will have undoubtedly played in his favour, Davide’s grasp of the German language will have equally helped the Italian secure the job.
"I support our coaches both in training and in pre-match preparations," Davide said.
"On the training pitch, I explain exercises or just help out with the language. My father speaks German well but doesn't understand everything yet."
Nepotism in football is not an uncommon occurrence. Harry Redknapp, Steve Bruce and Zinedine Zidane have all given their sons an opportunity in football in one capacity or another.
