Uefa yesterday confirmed that Wayne Rooney is to be credited with scoring England's second goal against Switzerland, despite the ball going into the net off the Swiss goalkeeper Jorg Stiel.

Fifteen minutes from the end of Thursday's Group B match, Rooney's low effort from the edge of the area cannoned back off a post and struck Stiel on the head before rebounding back into the net.

The European governing body originally credited the goal to the Everton striker, who had earlier given England the lead in the first half, and yesterday they confirmed they would not be changing their minds.

"The members of Uefa's Technical Study Group have decided that the second goal in the England v Switzerland match is credited to Wayne Rooney," a Uefa statement said.
