Gary Neville has denied claims made by the Observer that “friction” between himself and Roy Hodgson undermined England’s Euro 2016 campaign.

In an exclusive piece, the Observer’s Daniel Taylor claimed that a fractious relationship had built up between the two which often spilled out into disagreements among the other coaching staff.

While the players are alleged to have got on “fine”, in the worst moments there was a clear divide among the staff about the team’s methods with Hodgson and Neville reportedly at odds with one another.

“The players got on fine,” the Observer was reportedly told. “It was the coaches who fell out.”

Such was the severity of the situation that Hodgson’s methods were openly questioned by his own staff, writes Taylor.

In conjunction with this, player confusion over tactics and positional play also served to further “undermine” the Euro 2016 campaign which culminated in a humiliating 2-1 defeat to Iceland in the last-16.

Hodgson immediately resigned from his position in the wake of the defeat, with Neville and fellow assistant Ray Lewington following lead.

Unsurprisingly, Gary Neville has hit back at the claims.

Gary Neville responded to an article in The Guardian via Twitter (Twitter/@GNev2)

In a tweet directed against the article, Neville wrote: “This is absolute bulls***! Apology? Removal of article? Let me know!”

The incident follows what has been a difficult week for the Football Association and England’s players as the search continues for a suitable replacement to Roy Hodgson.

Arsene Wenger has been identified as a top target by the FA but Arsenal are poised to resist their efforts with the offer of a contract extension if the Gunners start the 2016/17 season well.
