Euro 2016: Arsenal duo Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain face England axe with Wayne Rooney on right wing

Roy Hodgson could deploy Wayne Rooney on the right wing for England at Euro 2016 in order to accommodate both Harry Kane and Dele Alli, but Arsenal duo Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may have played themselves out of the squad for the tournament this summer.

Rooney returned from a two-month absence last Wednesday after coming off the substitutes’ bench in Manchester United’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over West Ham, a result that puts Louis van Gaal’s side through to the semi-finals at Wembley and leaves them with a chance of securing silverware this season.

But while Rooney has endured his spell on the sidelines, both Kane and Jamie Vardy have excelled for both club and country. Following the victory over world champions Germany last month in which both strikers got on the scoresheet, Hodgson faced widespread calls to find a way to play Kane and Vardy in the same team which may have resulted in England captain Rooney being dropped.

Hodgson has refused to bow to pressure to drop Rooney in the past though and, despite claiming Rooney is not an automatic selection for the first team, he is highly unlikely to leave the 30-year-old out when England open their campaign against Russia on 11 June.

According to The Mirror, Hodgson will look to play Rooney in a wide-right role where he will face competition from Vardy and Raheem Sterling for the position, with Alli set to take up the No 10 role behind Kane where Rooney has played throughout the qualifying stages.

Vardy came off the substitutes’ bench against Germany to score and although the Leicester City forward has fired the Foxes to the cusp of a maiden Premier League title with 21 league goals this season, he looks set for an impact role as a replacement.

With Rooney in contention as one of the wide players though, it means both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain face missing out on the squad for the Championships altogether. Walcott has struggled for form of late, scoring just four goals in 2016, while Oxlade-Chamberlain has not played since February and is facing a race to be fit for the Euros regardless of Hodgson’s selection plans.

Despite returning to form with a hat-trick against Arsenal, West Ham striker Andy Carroll also looks set to miss out on the squad with Hodgson ready to take Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge. Carroll has been praised by West Ham manager Slaven Bilic as the best striker in the world when it comes to heading the ball at goal, while former England internationals Paul Ince and Dean Ashton have spoken out in support of Carroll’s inclusion.

But with Jurgen Klopp easing Sturridge back into his first-team plans at Liverpool to ensure he does not suffer another injury, Hodgson is believed to be optimistic that the 26-year-old will have no fitness doubts heading into the tournament even though there will be the demand of playing three group games in nine days.
