Flashback: No 8 - England 1966: Hurst rises from the ranks to become a legend

Geoff Hurst rises unchallenged to score England's winner from Martin Peters' cross in the quarter-final against Argentina at Wembley.

Hurst was brought into the side only after Jimmy Greaves was injured in the final group game against France and, happily for England, his 78th-minute goal in the 1-0 win helped cement his place in Sir Alf Ramsey's team for the final even when Greaves had recovered.

Argentina had been viewed as dangerous opponents but they had captain Antonio Rattin sent off for dissent in the 35th minute, the first player to be ordered off at Wembley. Rattin initially refused to go and when eventually persuaded to leave the pitch by several policemen wiped his hands on a Union Jack on one of the corner flags. At the end of the game Ramsey called the Argentines "animals" and ordered his players not to swap shirts.
