The Football Association have begun the process of recruiting a new England manager and identifying the team’s recurring flaws in major tournament by canvassing the opinion of leading football figures such as Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand and Harry Redknapp.

FA chief executive Martin Glenn, technical director Dan Ashworth and vice-chairman David Gill, the three-man panel set up to lead the search for Roy Hodgson’s successor, met in Paris last Friday to agree on a process to both find a new manager and end England’s dismal record in World Cups and European Championships.

And the search for Hodgson’s replacement will be a three-pronged approach, including a review of England’s Euro 2016 performance, the failings of previous major competitions and a short-listing process that will ensure that the next appointment possesses the key attributes to take the team forward and encourage stronger links between the senior squad and under-age teams.

The process will begin with a full assessment of England’s three-week stay in France, which ended with the second round defeat against Iceland in Nice.

Players and staff will be spoken to for their observations on the successes and failures of England’s preparation for the tournament, but the likes of Lineker and Ferdinand – who both captained England and performed at major tournaments – and former Tottenham manager Redknapp have already been spoken to for their outsiders’ observations of the Euro 2016 failings and longer term issues.

Other former players and managers will be spoken to in a ‘picking brains’ exercise, but the key focus of the process is to identify a new manager who is capable of not only building a winning team, but also ensuring a stronger mentality and identity.

Tactical awareness will be also be a key criteria, with the FA determined to recruit a man who invest the time to develop links between the senior team and development squads.
