Gary Caldwell will lead Scotland out for the first time tonight against Slovenia in Koper. The Wigan defender has been named captain in the absence of Darren Fletcher after manager Craig Levein decided to rest Kenny Miller after his exploits with Cardiff in the Carling Cup Final on Sunday.

"I've never started the game as captain," Caldwell said. "To get it for one night will be special. Fletch is the captain and Kenny the vice-captain – they are the men in possession and I am 100 per cent behind them."

Celtic's Charlie Mulgrew will win his first cap at full-back and Levein said: "I'd have picked him for Cyprus in November but he was injured. He's improved enormously and playing out his skin."

Alan Hutton has pulled out and been replaced by Bristol City's Richard Foster.
