Group D started with the biggest upset of the World Cup so far with Costa Rica defeating Uruguay.

The script was going to plan when Edinson Cavani slotted in from the penalty spot midway through the first half.

But Joel Campbell, the Arsenal striker who spent last season on loan with Olympiakos, equalised after 54 minutes and just three minutes later Costa Rica were ahead with Oscar Duarte scoring.

With Uruguay pushing for an equaliser without Luis Suarez, who was named on the bench but is still clearly not fit judging by his non-introduction, Marco Urena slipped in a third following Campbell's fine through ball.

Things got even worse for Uruguay when Maximiliano Pereira was sent off for a rash kick at Campbell.
