British Airways will not take England to Brazil World Cup because of a 'lack of a plane'

The Sun claim that a £10m price-tag has ended negotiations between the FA and BA but the flight company claim they can't free-up an aircraft for the duration of the tournament

British Airways has confirmed they have snubbed the chance to fly England to Brazil during their 2014 World Cup campaign, citing that they would not be able to free up a plane for the duration of the summer tournament.

Negotiations between the Football Association and BA broke down after the airline put a £10m price-tag on the travel plans according to The Sun, which will see England play in Manaus, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte.

However, the airline has claimed that the reason for not flying Roy Hodgson’s squad to Brazil is down to the lack of a free aircraft rather than any disputes over the cost, with BA admitting that they couldn’t free up a plane during the busy summer period.

A BA spokesman said: “We have not refused to carry the England team.

“Regrettably, we could not reach agreement with the FA because we will not have a spare aircraft available for the length of time the FA wanted during the busy summer period next year.

“This was not a question of a single flight or a simple return. We wish the team the best of luck and look forward to flying thousands of fans to the World Cup.”

Should England qualify from Group D, they will face a last 16 clash in either Rio de Janeiro – where they will be based throughout the tournament – or Recife, which is located on the east coast of Brazil.
