The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be four days shorter than normal, Fifa have announced.

The news comes as the dates for the controversial tournament, which will be held in winter rather than summer due to the extreme heat, were announced. The opening match will be played on November 21, with the final to be held on December 18.

It means that the tournament will run for just 28 days. The shortest 32-team tournament in history was 31 days, which was when it was hosted by France, whilst Brazil 2014 was 32 days in length.

The next instalment of the World Cup is in Russia.
