'So surreal, it's such a privilege' - striker Toney on first England call up

England suffered the ignominy of relegation from the Nations League’s top tier after a tepid defeat to Italy that raises further concern ahead of the winter World Cup.

Among the favourites to triumph in Qatar having reached the semi-finals four years ago and the Euro 2020 final, things have gone awry for Gareth Southgate’s side of late.

England failed to win any of their four June fixtures and produced a meek response to their 4-0 Molineux mauling against Hungary, with Giacomo Raspadori sealing Roberto Mancini’s Italy a 1-0 victory on Friday night.

A fifth straight match without a win means Southgate’s men have been relegated from Group A of the Nations League - a competition they finished third in three years ago - with a game to spare. Demotion is embarrassing but the performance is arguably of more concern given it is just 59 days until their World Cup opener against Iran.

Relive the action from the San Siro as Italy defeat England in the Nations League:

Italy 1-0 England

75 mins: Save! Wonderful stuff from Gianluigi Donnarumma. England burst forward and throw men up the pitch with a laser-focus to get the ball into the box.

Luke Shaw drills a low cross into the sxi-yard area that gets knocked out to Declan Rice. Rice sends it over to Harry Kane who shoots and forces the goalkeeper into a low save. The ball rebounds back to Kane you has another go but Donnarumma gets up and palms it away.

Italy 1-0 England

71 mins: Jack Grealish and Luke Shaw are brought on by Gareth Southgate in what will be a change in formation too. Kyle Walker and Bukayo Saka are the men replaced as England move to a back four.

Will those changes spur England into life?

GOAL! Italy 1-0 England (Raspadori, 68’)⚽️

68 mins: What a finish! The ball comes over the top to Giacomo Raspadori whose first touch is exceptional. He brings it down and shifts inside of Kyle Walker who drops off and leaves the striker with space in the box.

Raspadori takes his time, rolls the ball into space then belts it into the far bottom corner! Nick Pope has no chance and Italy take the lead.

Italy 0-0 England

63 mins: Harry Maguire gets the wrong side of Giovanni Di Lorenzo and pushes him over when Bryan Cristante slides the ball past Raheem Sterling on Italy’s right side.

Italy’s free kick is well defended by Kyle Walker but his clearance gives the ball back to the home side and Di Lorenzo’s recycled effort is scooped up by Nick Pope.
