England v Netherlands: England fans sing the national anthem ahead of Nations League match

The Netherlands broke English hearts in Portugal on Thursday night, battling back to overturn a 1-0 deficit and reach the final of the inaugural Nations League.

In a match similar to England’s World Cup semi-final against Croatia last year, Gareth Southgate’s side started very well and took the lead when Marcus Rashford scored from the penalty spot. But the Manchester United striker then picked up an injury and England began to be pinned back after Harry Kane was introduced from the bench.

A Dutch equaliser always looked likely and it came when Matthijs de Ligt – who conceded the first-half penalty – scored with a thumping header.

The Netherlands then won the semi-final in calamitous fashion. John Stones was caught in possession by Memphis Depay with Quincy Promes eventually scoring via a Kyle Walker deflection. And Promes was on target again moments later, pouncing after a Ross Barkley error to make sure of the win.

Here is how we rated the two teams.
