Brentford will be tough for us - Pep

Brentford completed a stunning victory over Manchester City in their final game before the World Cup. It has been decades since the Bees beat City away from home but they started brilliantly with two great chances inside the opening 10 minutes for Frank Onyeka and Ivan Toney.

The breakthrough came through a long free kick as Ben Mee won the initial ball and nodded it up to Toney in the box where Brentford’s captain headed the Bees in front. The visitors then sat back and looked to defend their lead up to the break but Man City burst into life. They dominated possession and built momentum on the edge of the Brentford penalty area. Kevin De Bruyne then swung a corner into the path of Phil Foden who smashed City back level just before half-time.

An injury to Aymeric Laporte early in the second half meant that 10 minutes of stoppage time were added on at the end as City pushed for a late winner. Brentford kept the faith though and committed men up the pitch during a rapid counter-attack that saw Josh Dasilva feed Toney the ball and the striker calmly turned it home for a historic win.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea

54 mins: Newcastle have started the second half as the much better side. They’ve kept Chelsea penned in and have intensified their pressing.

Chalobah manages to clear the ball up to Pulisic but he can’t find a way through the midfield. Suffocating stuff from the home team.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea

51 mins: Chances! Trippier puts a cross into the box that Guimaraes keeps alive at the byline. He nods the ball down to where Chris Wood is waiting but the striker is closed down by Mendy and the ball comes loose.

Newcastle recover and recycle the ball with Trippier flicking it back into the box for Almiron. He squares it to Longstaff who shoots first time and lifts the ball over the crossbar!

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea

48 mins: Miguel Almiron nicks the ball and slides it down the right side of the penalty area where Joelinton collects the ball. He dances inside of Jorginho and fizzes a cross into the box.

It’s a pacey pass that flies over everyone before dropping to a defender and Chelsea work it clear.

It should be fine: James Maddison plays down injury scare ahead of World Cup

James Maddison insisted he should be fit for the World Cup despite an injury scare in their 2-0 win at West Ham.

The midfielder, called into Gareth Southgate’s England squad on Thursday, went down holding his leg in the 23rd minute.

After receiving treatment on the pitch the midfielder, who had opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the season, gingerly left the field.

With England’s first match just nine days away, even a relatively minor injury could have meant Maddison missing out in Qatar.

As it stands Newcastle are dropping down to fourth placed following Tottenham’s 4-3 victory over Leeds earlier today. If they manage to go on to win this match they will move back ahead of Antonio Conte’s Spurs.

Half-time: Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea

45+2 mins: Goalless at half-time. Nothing to separate the two teams as they head into the break but it’s been an interesting contest.

Chelsea haven’t been close to their best but they’ve managed to keep Newcastle relatively quiet. The hosts have enjoyed the better periods of possession but there hasn’t been many shots.

An opening goal may change the intensity of the match.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea

42 mins: Fabian Schar flicks the ball over the top of the Chelsea defence but his pass is too heavy for Almiron’s run in behind. The ball skips away from the winger and Mendy comes out to claim it.
