Adrian Chiles leaves ITV: Twitter reacts to presenter's departure

Chiles has left his role with ITV Sport with 'immediate effect' after his contract was terminated

The news that Adrian Chiles has left ITV Sport managed to dominate the headlines on Friday, and that’s no easy feat given that we’ve entered the final 10 days of the January transfer window. Having spent the last four years with the TV broadcasters, it appears that his contracted was terminated early, despite signing a two-year contract extension worth a reported £1m-a-year just before the 2014 World Cup.

Unsurprisingly, Twitter quickly went into a meltdown with Chiles’ name on everyone’s lips – or fingers if you count yourself as a social media guru. Strangely enough, the majority of Chiles-related tweets featured not the commentator himself, but a rather happy Alan Partridge.

As has become a regular occurrence with any internet trend, Chiles had become the latest victim of ‘getting the full Alan Partridge treatment’.

It appears that the supporters of a Facebook campaign calling for ITV to make do with the former Match of the Day 2 and The One Show presenter have got their wish. However, it may not be the last we've heard from Chiles. Rumours are circulating that the reason his contract has been terminated is due to a move to another sport broadcasting channel.

Which one? We couldn't possibly say.

Viewers will now be treated to the sounds of Mark Pougatch, who has made a name for himself on BBC Radio Five Live, among other platforms.
