Mesut Özil will be reminded of his responsibilities by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger after he was pictured clubbing in Berlin just hours after missing the 2-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle with illness.

Özil was left out of the Gunners’ squad for the trip to St James’ Park and was allowed to fly to Germany early to aid his recovery ahead of the national team’s international friendly against Australia on Wednesday and their 2016 European Championship qualifier against Georgia on Sunday.

It’s reported that Özil will be expected to return from international duty within 48 hours of the match with Georgia in order to prepare for their crucial Premier League encounter with Liverpool on 4 April in a match that could prove pivotal in the race for the top-four.

However, once the £42,5m midfielder returns to the club, it’s believed that Wenger will speak to him about his conduct, although it is not suggested that there has been any serious wrongdoing.

Wenger has already had to deal with indiscretions among his playing squad this season having sanctioned goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after the was caught smoking in the St Mary’s changing rooms following the 2-0 defeat to Southampton on New Year’s Day.

Szczesny was warned by Wenger and given a fine, and the Poland international was subsequently dropped from the first team in favour of David Ospina, although it can be argued that Szczesny’s form alone was enough to see him take a break from the starting line-up as he was at fault for both goals conceded against Saints.

Wenger has also had to deal with England midfielder Jack Wilshere after he was twice pictured smoking, although the 65-year-old Frenchman chose to have a word with 23-year-old Wilshere rather than take disciplinary action.
