A footballer has been fined more than £7,000 for a brutal foul that left his opponent with career-threatening injuries.

In November, Sandro Wieser of FC Aarau seriously injured Gilles Yapi-Yapo in a match in the Swiss Super League.

Yapi-Yapo suffered a torn anterior and interior cruciate ligaments, serious cartilage damage, a torn meniscus, a torn kneecap tendon and deep bruising to his thigh and has not been able to play since.

FC Zurich decided to take legal action against Wieser and State prosecutors in the public prosecution office in Lenzburg-Aarau ruled Wieser’s tackle on the former Ivory Coast international as negligent and assault.

Wieser, 22, has been fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£7,137) for the tackle although Lenzburg-Aarau prosecutors say Wieser can appeal the sentence.

The Liechtenstein international was suspended six games by the Swiss League.
