Southampton could look to fine suspended striker Dani Osvaldo up to six weeks’ wages should he not leave the club by the end of the January transfer window.

Osvaldo was dismissed temporarily from Saints’ training ground after he head-butted defender Jose Fonte, with the club electing to hand the Italian a two-week suspension for is misconduct.

He has since been linked with a St Mary’s exit, although the club can choose to fine him up to two-weeks’ wages, with the allowance to extend that to six-weeks’ worth in extreme cases as long as they seek permission from the PFA.

Officials at the Premier League club will not make a decision until the January transfer window deadline has passed on Friday night, but could then choose to impose a near-£250,000 fine for his recent actions.

According to the Daily Mail, Fonte was left with a black eye and a suspected broken nose after his team-mate head-butted him in a training ground altercation, and it is believed that certain members of the squad do not want him to play for the club again.

Former chairman Nicola Cortese helped secure the club-record £15m signing of Osvaldo, but he has since resigned from his role with at the club. The 28-year-old will miss Southampton’s Premier League home fixture against Arsenal tonight, having already missed the FA Cup victory over Yeovil on the weekend.

He is also unavailable for the trip to Fulham on Saturday, but by then he could have left the club as the final days of the transfer window pass by.

The incident is not the first to involve Osvaldo, with the FA choosing to fine him £40,000 and hand him a three-match ban following a touchline fracas in the draw with Newcastle last month, and he also had to be dragged from the pitch by manager Mauricio Pochettino after the final whistle of the 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa, when he became embroiled in an argument with the opposition.
