Women’s football round-up: Glasgow City make Champions League quarter-finals after dramatic turnaround

England forward Lianne Sanderson completed her eagerly-anticipated return to Arsenal Ladies on Monday evening after leaving Boston Breakers.

The 26-year-old, who also had a recent spell at Cypriot club Apollon, expressed her delight at returning to her “home” club. During an interview with the club’s website, manager Pedro Martinez Losa said her addition will be a “big asset” to the club.

Manchester City have their first signing ahead of the new season after securing Liverpool’s highly-rated defender Lucy Bronze. The 23-year-old, who has won 15 caps for England, was named PFA Women’s Player of the Year in April and was a key part of the side which won back-to-back titles over the past two seasons.

Chelsea’s Ji So-Yun was named the WSL player of the year at the FA Women’s Awards on Friday. The South Korean midfielder finished ahead of Birmingham City’s Karen Carney and Notts County striker Jess Clarke, with Birmingham manager David Parker collecting the award for Manager of the Year after finishing third. Toni Duggan’s fine volley on the final day of the season in Manchester City’s 2-1 win against Chelsea was voted Goal of the Season.

After last week’s i player of the week Fabienne Humm had put Zurich in front in the last-16 Champions League tie, Jo Love provided the kind of heart Glasgow City needed in the dying moments. With her team heading out, she scored with nine minutes left to give her team the lead on the night, before team-mate Susanne Lappin headed home the winner to send the Scots through to the quarter-finals. And on Sunday, she capped a dream week, notching a brace as Glasgow beat Spartans 5-0 to complete a domestic treble.

Moment of the week
Glasgow City are simply unbeatable in Scottish women’s football. Now they are trying to exert their influence on a continental scale, and with fine results. They were put to the test by Swiss side Zurich after a narrow 2-1 first leg victory, and quickly found themselves staring down the barrel of defeat in the return leg. Glasgow had nine minutes to score twice, and they did that through Love and Lappin to complete an amazing turnaround.
