A rape charge against Dundee United's Scotland international David Goodwillie has been dropped.

Mr Goodwillie, 22, was accused of assaulting a woman at a house party in West Lothian on 2 January and was charged on 17 January, but the Crown Office said there was "insufficient evidence in law" for the case to proceed.

A spokesman said: "After full and careful consideration of all the facts, Crown Counsel has instructed no proceedings on the basis that there is insufficient evidence in law."

Goodwillie made his full Scotland debut last November.

Turkish domestic season on hold

The Turkish football authorities have postponed the start of the domestic season for a month as a result of an ongoing match-fixing investigation that has seen 30 suspects jailed, including the president of champions Fenerbahce. The authorities are investigating alleged attempts to fix 19 games last season, with officials from Besiktas and and Trabzonspor also awaiting trial.

Gabbidon secures one-year deal

Queen's Park Rangers have completed the signing of the Wales international Danny Gabbidon on a one-year contract. The 31-year-old centre-half left West Ham at the end of his contract this summer. He made 113 appearances in six years at Upton Park and had been training with QPR, playing in three games on their tour of Cornwall.
