Press Watch: Liverpool 'poised to hijack Kewell's £7m move from Leeds to Arsenal'

The 'exclusive' News of the World's revelation that Liverpool have "secretly landed Harry Kewell" in a £7m transfer was clearly not as secret as they imagined. The Sunday Mirror also reports that "Liverpool are trying to hijack Arsenal's £7m bid" while the People takes the tale a step further, suggesting "Liverpool's attempt to hijack Arsenal's £7m move for Kewell could be hijacked by AC Milan."

The People says Kewell's desire to go abroad has made Milan favourites, suggesting Arsenal could move instead for Middlesbrough's Jonathan Greening, although Boro's demand for £5m for the ex-Manchester United player has not impressed them.

But the News of the World insists Kewell will be unveiled at Anfield a week today after Leeds accepted a deal put forward by his agent Bernie Mandic, who told the Elland Road club they would get £7m for the forward if they agreed not to know the name of the buying club.

The Sunday Express says Manchester United will finally land Ronaldinho after Real Madrid agreed to pull out of the race for the Paris St-Germain player as part of the deal to take United's Carlos Queiroz as coach, although a story in the News of the World says Madrid are planning to deal United a third blow after capturing Queiroz and David Beckham by moving in for Old Trafford target Damien Duff.

The Mirror says Internazionale are preparing a £10m bid for United's Juan Sebastian Veron, having apparently been told he can leave Old Trafford. The News of the World, however, says the Milan club wants to do business with Arsenal to snap up either Freddie Ljungberg or Robert Pires, offering the French midfielder Stephane Dalmat in part exchange. The same paper reckons Southampton are looking at Arsenal's Brazilian midfielder Edu.

Chelsea's eagerness to remove £50,000-a-week Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink from their payroll could result in allowing the Dutchman to move with half his wages paid by them, according to the People. Wolves are said to be interested.

The News of the World links Sheffield United with Aston Villa's released full-back Alan Wright and the veteran Leicester striker Brian Deane, and says Everton could bid £2m for Chicago Fire's DaMarcus Beasley. The People links the Goodison club with Real Madrid's Steve McManaman.

The Mail on Sunday is mystified by Aston Villa's reported astonishment over Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson's £30,000-a-week contract at Elland Road, particularly since the Villa manager David O'Leary was in charge of Leeds when Robinson's deal was negotiated.
