The West Ham manager Glenn Roeder is in talks to sign the Strasbourg striker Pegguy Luyindula. Roeder wants to take the former French Under-21 international on loan for a year with a view to a £5m deal.

Luyindula is keen on the move, having rejected transfers to Rennes and Bastia in the last few days. He would also prefer the Upton Park club to Bolton, who have offered £2.5m for him. The West Ham chief executive Paul Aldridge saw the Zaire-born 22-year-old score once and win two penalties for Strasbourg on Saturday.

The Preston manager David Moyes been thwarted in his quest to sign Charlton's right-back Greg Shields by a change of mind from Alan Curbishley.

Moyes hoped to sign the Scottish defender on loan with a view to a permanent £400,000 move to Deepdale. But Curbishley, who initially allowed the deal to happen, has now claimed he needs Shields because of an injury crisis.

Shaun Newton is poised to leave Charlton for Wolves in a £1.2m deal this week. The long-serving Newton will have talks with the Wolves manager David Jones about the transfer today but seems sure to move.

Wolves have had limited success with their transfer bids this summer but Jones hopes he can talk Newton into joining.
