Sol Campbell says that Alexis Sanchez can inspire Arsenal to greater heights in the Champions League this season.

The Gunners have failed to reach the quarter-finals of Europe's elite competition in each of their last four seasons, and it remains the only major trophy that has eluded Arsene Wenger during his 18 years with the club.

"It is important to bring in players like Alexis who have played in and won [big games] in the Champions League," Campbell told Goal.

"Alexis understands the tournament. We have been there a number of times in the Champions League and it is all about every year being in the game and pushing hard.

"We just need that bit of luck to go our way but you also have to put your neck on the line and buy players – which we are now. You need to be in it to win it and that is what Arsenal are trying to do."

Campbell, who scored for the Gunners in their Champions League final defeat against Barcelona in 2006, added: "Sanchez has come from a fantastic club in Barcelona so he knows the pressure of playing in that kind of environment.

"The pressure will be the same at Arsenal so that is a good thing. His dynamics are good, he knows where the goal is and is very workmanlike at getting back into position as well.

"He knows how to play in big teams and that is what you need in a player. You need big-time players who also work hard, so he has a fantastic balance."
