West Ham and Chelsea charged over clashes

Chelsea and West Ham have been charged by the Football Association following alleged incidents of missile- throwing by fans during their League Cup tie at Stamford Bridge on 27 October.

The two clubs, who have been charged for their alleged failure to ensure that spectators refrain from threatening, violent or provocative behaviour, have until 4 January to answer the charges.

During the game, Chelsea's goalscorer Mateja Kezman had to leave the field for treatment to a head injury caused by a missile, believed to be a coin, which appeared to have come from the West Ham section.

Police in riot gear were also confronted by a number of visiting fans 10 minutes after the final whistle and, with some Chelsea fans also becoming involved, it took a further 15 minutes for order to be restored.

Chelsea will fight the charge and have promised to submit a "full and detailed reply."
